Abstract
This study explores the historical development of Western education in Lokoja, Nigeria, from the colonial era to 2015. Lokoja, strategically located along the Niger and Benue rivers, played a pivotal role in the introduction and spread of Western education in Northern Nigeria due to its early contact with colonial administrators, missionaries, and traders. The research traces the foundation laid by Christian missions—particularly the Church Missionary Society (CMS)—and examines the British colonial government’s role in shaping educational structures, policies, and access. The study investigates how education evolved through different political epochs: the colonial period, early independence, military rule, and the democratic era, up to 2015. It also evaluates the sociopolitical and economic factors that influenced educational growth, including local community participation, government policies, and infrastructural challenges. Emphasis is placed on the establishment of primary and secondary schools, teacher training institutions, and the expansion of formal education to marginalized groups over time. By analyzing archival materials, oral interviews, and existing scholarly works, the study provides insight into how Western education transformed Lokoja’s society and identity. It concludes that while Western education brought considerable progress, its uneven implementation and politicization left enduring challenges that persisted into the post-2015 era....
