Abstract
This study examines the prevalence of plasmodiasis (malaria) among pregnant women attending antenatal care at General Hospital Gboko, Benue State. Malaria in pregnancy is a major public health concern in Nigeria, contributing significantly to maternal morbidity, anemia, low birth weight, and perinatal mortality. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence rate of plasmodiasis among pregnant women and identify associated risk factors. A sample population of 150 pregnant women was used. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and laboratory analysis of blood samples to detect the presence of Plasmodium falciparum, the most common and deadly malaria parasite. Demographic and clinical information such as age, parity, gestational age, and use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) were also recorded. Based on the findings from the study on the prevalence of plasmodiasis among pregnant women attending antenatal care at the general hospital in Gboko, Benue State, several important conclusions can be drawn. Firstly, the overall prevalence of 13.3% indicates that while plasmodiasis affects a portion of this population, the majority of pregnant women (86.6%) tested negative. This suggests that existing malaria prevention efforts, such as the use of insecticide-treated nets and intermittent preventive treatment, may be contributing to limiting the spread of the disease among pregnant attendees. The recommendations of this project work is, implementing routine malaria screening for all pregnant women attending antenatal care visits was crucial for early detection and treatment. This included age-specific interventions to address the varying prevalence rates among different age groups, ensuring timely and appropriate medical responses....
