Abstract
This study investigates the effect of effective credit risk management on the performance of banks in Nigeria, using United Bank for Africa (UBA) as a case study. Credit risk management is essential for minimizing non-performing loans, ensuring optimal credit levels, and enhancing profitability in commercial banks. The research addresses challenges such as poor loan quality, high default rates, and inadequate risk controls that have led to financial distress in the sector. Employing a descriptive survey design, data were collected via structured questionnaires from 60 respondents, including bank staff and customers. Analysis utilized frequency distributions, percentages, and chi-square tests to evaluate hypotheses on client appraisal, credit risk control, and collection policies. Findings reveal a strong positive relationship (R  0.892) between these credit management strategies and financial performance, with client appraisal, risk controls, and stringent collection policies significantly reducing defaults and improving loan recovery. Respondents confirmed that UBA employs these practices to a great extent, though barriers like high interest rates and bureaucratic processes persist. The study concludes that robust credit risk management is vital for bank sustainability and profitability. Recommendations include adopting more flexible yet stringent collection policies, improving client appraisal techniques, and strengthening risk controls to mitigate non-performing loans and boost overall performance in Nigerian banks....
