Abstract
Silica aerogels are highly porous, lightweight materials with exceptional thermal, optical, and mechanical properties, making them valuable for diverse applications in insulation, adsorption, and catalysis. In this study, silica aerogel was synthesized from rice husk, an abundant agricultural by-product, with the aim of converting agro-waste into high-value material. Rice husk was first subjected to controlled combustion and chemical treatment to obtain rice husk ash rich in amorphous silica. The extracted silica was then processed via sol-gel method followed by drying under ambient pressure to obtain silica aerogel. The prepared aerogel was characterized for its physicochemical properties using techniques such as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Physicochemical analysis indicated high surface area, low bulk density, significant porosity, and amorphous structure, which are consistent with properties of standard silica aerogels. The results demonstrate that rice husk, a low-cost renewable resource, can serve as an efficient precursor for the production of silica aerogels, providing an eco-friendly and sustainable route for agricultural waste utilization. This study highlights the potential of rice husk-derived silica aerogels in industrial applications such as thermal insulation, adsorption, and environmental remediation....
