Abstract
Natural compounds are chemical compounds or substances produced by a living organism or found in nature. The natural compounds of interest are sulphur stones, blue stones, and black stones. Dental caries is the localized destruction of susceptible dental hard tissues by acidic by-products from bacterial fermentation of dietary carbohydrates. This research work is aimed at evaluating the antimicrobial effect of selected natural compounds on microorganisms implicated in dental caries. Specific objectives include isolating and identifying the microorganisms present in dental caries and ascertaining the antimicrobial effects of natural compounds on these microorganisms. This project work was carried out at the Microbiology Laboratory Unit, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. Thirty dental swab specimens were carefully and aseptically collected individually from dental caries patients. Plates of nutrient and Sabouraud’s dextrose agar were inoculated using the spread plate method and incubated at 25 °C for 24hours and 48 hours, respectively. The isolates were identified and characterized based on their microscopic, macroscopic, biochemical and physiological characteristics. The identification tests include Gram staining, catalase, coagulase, motility, citrate, hemolysis and sugar fermentation tests. The pure cultures isolated include Staphylococcus sp., Streptococcus sp., and Bacillus sp. (bacteria) and Candida sp. (fungus). For antimicrobial susceptibility of the natural compounds, the agar well diffusion method was used. The test showed that the isolates were susceptible to some of the natural compounds as observed in the MIC, MBC and IZD values. The findings made from this research work showed that natural compounds can be used as antimicrobials and their production at an industrial level for dental caries treatment is encouraged. ...
