Abstract
In the context of Nigeria's manufacturing sector, the financial performance of manufacturing firms is critically influenced by their capital structure, which determines the composition of debt and equity used to finance operations and growth. This study determined the Impact of Capital Structure on the Financial Performance of Listed Manufacturing Firms in Nigeria (2013-2023). The specific objective of this study is to examine the extent to which liquidity, firm size and leverage affect the financial performance of listed manufacturing firms in Nigeria. Capital Structure Irrelevance Theory and Dynamic Trade-off Theory was reviewed for the purpose of this study. This study adopted an Ex-post facto research design and purposively selected six (6) manufacturing companies (firms) listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange: Guinness, UAC Nigeria Breweries, Nestle Nigeria, Unilever Nigeria and Cadbury. The study formulated three hypotheses and findings were explicitly discussed. The study found that liquidity has a significant impact on the financial performance of manufacturing firms in Nigeria. The study also found that firm size has a significant impact on the financial performance of the firms. Leverage has a significant impact on the financial performance of manufacturing firms in Nigeria and the impact is positive. In view of the findings, it is recommended among others that the management of the selected companies should work very hard to increase the size of their capital structure, since it has a positive impact on their financial performance. Also, the companies should reduce the level of liquidity and leverage in their capital structure components, because they affect their financial performance negatively....
