Abstract
This paper examined the newspaper coverage of drug abuse among undergraduate university students in Nigeria, using three selected daily national newspapers. The study is premised on the background of the heightened incidence of drug and substance abuse  among  Nigerian youth, and the corresponding duties of the press in curbing the ugly menace. In particular, the recent upsurge in the intake/inhaling of methamphetamine (Crystal Meth, Mkpulumiri) is an added background to this study. Aimed at finding out the significant relationship between the pattern of reportage on the incidence and the depth of coverage, the prominence given to the coverage, and the dominant journalism frames, this paper is anchored on the agenda-setting theory of the press. The paper adopted a content analytical approach and selected three daily national newspapers, Daily Sun, Vanguard and Daily Independent, based on nationwide coverage and circulation. The period of study was two years (1st January 2022 to 31st December 2023) while the population of interest was 2,190 editions of the three selected newspapers. The paper drew a sample size of 338 editions of the selected newspaper, using Taro Yamen’s formula, and further used the composite week sampling strategy to draw the sample. Results obtained from this study were presented in a simple frequency distribution table and subsequently analyzed. Findings from this study revealed that although the selected newspapers carried a sufficient quantity of news on drug abuse, prominence was not given to the reportage on the subject matter. The results also revealed that the dominant pattern of the reportage was news. The paper recommended that newspapers should endeavour to adopt the investigative journalism approach in covering drug abuse.
