Abstract
This study examines the impact of population growth on Nigeria’s economic development, with a focus on food production and unemployment rates from 2000 to 2023. Utilizing time series data and advanced econometric techniques, including unit root tests, ARDL bounds testing, and co-integration analysis, the research investigates whether demographic changes influence agricultural output, unemployment, and overall economic performance. The findings reveal that Nigeria’s population has outpaced food production, leading to demand pressures and potential food inflation, while population growth significantly positively affects agricultural output. However, unemployment trends, though negatively related, are not statistically significant. The study underscores the critical need for integrated population management policies, improved labor market information systems, and investments in health and education to foster sustainable development. The results contribute valuable insights for policymakers aiming to align Nigeria’s demographic trends with economic growth strategies and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030....
