Abstract
The purpose of this research work is to evaluate the impact of television commercialization on sports development. The scope of the study ensures a focused investigation into how television commercialization impacts sports development from the perspective of the university’s undergraduate demographic. The study employed a quantitative research survey method. The study population consisted of undergraduate students from four (4) selected faculties and eight (8) selected departments within Nnamdi Azikiwe University, with a total sample size of 400 respondents using a random sampling technique in which students were randomly selected from a list of registered undergraduate students provided by the university administration. A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed and retrieved completely. The data collected were analyzed and quantified into simple mathematical and tabular representations using Microsoft Excel Package, percentages and occurrence (frequencies). The study found that a significant majority of students (about 75%) frequently watch televised sports commercials, especially during major sports events and advertisements by sports brands. Approximately 68% of students reported that televised sports commercials increase their interest in sports activities. There is a positive correlation between exposure to sports commercials and students’ participation in sports on campus. Over-commercialization may lead to a focus on profit rather than sports integrity. Some students feel that commercialization sometimes promotes superficial sports interests, overshadowing grassroots development. Therefore, it is recommended that stakeholders balance commercial interests with developmental objectives, ensuring that all sports receive equitable attention and that the benefits of commercialization translate into tangible improvements in sports infrastructure, training, and participation at the grassroots level....
