Abstract
This study examined the roles, level of knowledge, and interventions of CHPs in the reduction of maternal mortality in Aiyedire Local Government Area of Osun State, Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional research design was employed, involving 47 Community Health Practitioners who were selected using a purposive sampling method. Data were gathered through a structured questionnaire that captured respondents’ socio-demographic characteristics, roles, knowledge, and perceived effectiveness in reducing maternal mortality. Descriptive statistical tools such as frequencies and percentages were used for data analysis, and findings were presented using tables and figures. The results showed that most CHPs contributed significantly to the reduction of maternal mortality through health education (89.4%), provision of reproductive health services (80.9%), and the use of antiseptic practices during home deliveries (95.7%). Furthermore, 76.6% of respondents reported that the involvement of CHPs during labor reduced the chances of operative vaginal and cesarean births. Despite these positive contributions, gaps in knowledge were identified, as only 48.9% recognized hypertensive disorders as a cause of maternal mortality. The study also revealed that 68.1% of respondents believed CHP interventions helped to reduce deaths from maternal sepsis, while 57.4% felt that successful maternal health outcomes were largely dependent on the efforts of CHPs. In conclusion, Community Health Practitioners play an essential role in reducing maternal mortality in Aiyedire Local Government Area; however, existing gaps in their knowledge of certain causes of maternal death must be addressed. The study recommends continuous capacity-building and training programs for CHPs, increased governmental support through better integration into the formal health system, and adequate provision of resources. Additionally, community members are encouraged to support CHP activities and make use of available maternal health services ...
