Abstract
This study investigated the factors influencing the practice of abortion among women of childbearing age in Ogbomosho West Local Government Area, Oyo State, Nigeria. The objective was to assess the knowledge, reasons, and contributing socio-demographic and systemic factors driving abortion in this demographic. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, utilizing structured questionnaires to collect data from 185 women of reproductive age. Respondents were selected through stratified random sampling. Descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages, were used to analyze the data, with results presented in tables and charts. The results revealed that the majority of respondents were between 25–34 years old (50%), predominantly Yoruba (81%), and had attained at least secondary education (56%). Most respondents demonstrated considerable knowledge about abortion risks, with 97% acknowledging its potential to cause death and 83% aware of complications. Despite this awareness, key reasons for abortion included not being ready for motherhood (89%), pregnancy outside wedlock (84%), financial hardship (81%), and fear of interrupting education or career (79%). Influential factors included poverty (81%), lack of reproductive health education (77%), and inadequate access to contraceptives (71%) and healthcare services (76%). In conclusion, the study indicates that abortion among women of childbearing age is not merely a medical issue but one rooted in socio-economic, cultural, and educational challenges. The study recommends enhanced sexual and reproductive health education, improved access to affordable contraceptives and healthcare services, and empowerment initiatives to support young women, particularly in rural and semi-urban communities. ...
