Abstract
Taxation remains a major instrument for revenue generation and economic development in Nigeria. In a bid to strengthen fiscal sustainability, widen the tax base, and promote inclusive growth, the Federal Government of Nigeria introduced comprehensive tax reforms scheduled to take effect in 2026. This study examines the impact of the 2026 tax reform on Nigeria’s economic development, with particular focus on government revenue, investment climate, employment generation, and economic growth. The study adopts a descriptive survey research design and utilizes both primary and secondary data. Primary data were obtained through structured questionnaires administered to tax officials, business owners, professionals, and civil servants, while secondary data were sourced from government publications, tax policy documents, journals, textbooks, and reputable online materials. A sample size of 150 respondents was selected using simple random and purposive sampling techniques. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, tables, and charts. Findings from the study reveal that the 2026 tax reform is expected to positively impact Nigeria’s economic development by increasing government revenue, improving tax compliance, and creating a more equitable tax system, especially through reliefs for low-income earners and incentives for businesses. However, the study also identifies challenges such as poor public awareness, administrative inefficiencies, weak enforcement mechanisms, and the risk of increased cost of living in the short run....
