Abstract
Clubfoot, medically known as congenital talipes equinovarus, is a prevalent birth defect that can cause serious physical disability if left untreated. Parents play a vital role in early recognition, consistent treatment, and long-term outcomes. This research evaluates the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of parents regarding clubfoot at General Hospital, Ilorin, Ilorin. The goal is to identify gaps in awareness and barriers to effective care in order to guide targeted interventions. The study adopted a descriptive cross-sectional design, involving 150 parents of children diagnosed with clubfoot. Data were gathered using structured questionnaires and analyzed with both descriptive and inferential statistics. Key areas examined included parental understanding of the causes and treatment of clubfoot, their attitudes toward the condition, and adherence to treatment protocols. Sociodemographic influences on parental perspectives were also explored. Results showed that only 40% of parents had sufficient knowledge of clubfoot management, with many attributing the condition to spiritual or supernatural causes. About 35% displayed negative attitudes, often linked to feelings of shame or stigma. While 60% maintained clinic attendance, 30% discontinued treatment prematurely due to financial difficulties, lack of visible improvement, or logistical challenges. The findings highlight significant gaps in parental knowledge and attitudes that hinder effective management. The study recommends community-based education programs to dispel myths and improve understanding. Additional suggestions include financial assistance, culturally sensitive counseling, and parent support groups to encourage adherence and reduce stigma. Addressing these barriers can greatly improve treatment outcomes and the quality of life for affected children. Future research should assess the impact of educational interventions and the long-term benefits of stronger parental involvement ...
