Abstract
This study examined the average time required for radiological union in scaphoid fractures managed non-operatively at the General Hospital, Ilorin. Scaphoid fractures, which account for 2–7% of all fractures, are most common among young adults. Due to the bone’s unique blood supply and high functional demands, healing is often complicated. Displaced fractures are typically visible on radiographs, but the diagnostic approach for suspected scaphoid injuries remains debated. Imaging techniques such as bone scintigraphy, MRI, and CT each have limitations. Prompt treatment generally improves outcomes. Scaphoid fractures may be managed either conservatively or surgically. However, proximal and displaced fractures tend to have poorer results and are often better treated with open or closed reduction and internal fixation. Reported rates of scaphoid non-union range between 5% and 15%, and these cases are usually managed surgically to restore anatomy and prevent degenerative wrist arthritis. ...
