Abstract
This study investigated the knowledge, acceptance, and utilization of Natural Family Planning (NFP) methods among married teachers in selected secondary schools in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, with the rising concerns about overpopulation, maternal mortality, and low contraceptive uptake in Nigeria, particularly regarding NFP methods, the research aimed to assess awareness levels, attitudes, and barriers associated with their use. A descriptive research design was adopted, involving 104 married teachers from three purposively selected schools. Data were collected using a self-structured questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS. Findings revealed that while 100% of respondents had heard of natural family planning, the primary sources of information were health workers and mass media. Most respondents (99%) correctly identified NFP as a method to prevent pregnancy, and a high percentage acknowledged its health benefits for the family. Despite this awareness, several sociocultural and religious factors influenced acceptance and practice. While 77% of respondents agreed that NFP is effective, 91% believed it interferes with sexual pleasure, and 87% stated it should not be made compulsory in marriage institutions. Barriers such as inadequate publicity, cultural misconceptions, and male partner resistance were significant challenges to widespread acceptance. Hypothesis testing revealed a significant relationship between knowledge and age, and between acceptance and religion. The study concludes that while knowledge of NFP is high among the population studied, acceptance and consistent use are still limited by sociocultural and informational barriers. It recommends intensified awareness campaigns, inclusion of NFP in marital counseling programs, and more engagement with male partners to improve uptake and sustainability ...
