Abstract
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a major public health challenge globally, with adolescents representing one of the most vulnerable groups due to risky sexual behaviors, peer influence, and limited access to accurate sexual health information. Despite widespread awareness campaigns, knowledge gaps persist among adolescents, particularly in developing countries such as Nigeria. This study assessed the awareness and knowledge of STIs among adolescents in Iworoko Community High School, Ekiti State. A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed, with a sample size of 200 adolescents aged 10–19 years, selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that while 87% of respondents had heard of STIs, only 42% demonstrated good knowledge of transmission modes, symptoms, and prevention strategies. HIV/AIDS was the most recognized infection, identified by 68% of respondents, whereas knowledge of other STIs, such as syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, was significantly lower. Preventive practices were poor, with only 39% reporting consistent condom use during sexual activity. Educational status and exposure to sexual health education were significantly associated with knowledge levels (p  0.05). The study concludes that although awareness of STIs among adolescents in Iworoko is relatively high, comprehensive knowledge and preventive practices remain inadequate. Recommendations include strengthening school-based sexual health education, improving access to youth friendly reproductive health services, and engaging parents and community leaders in awareness campaigns. These interventions are essential to reduce the incidence of STIs, promote safer sexual behaviors, and improve adolescent reproductive health outcomes. ...
