Abstract
This study examined the impact of auditing on reducing outright embezzlement in local government administration. The persistent challenges of financial mismanagement, corruption, defalcation, and misappropriation of public funds in local governments have raised serious concerns about accountability, transparency, and effective service delivery at the grassroots level. Auditing serves as an important mechanism for ensuring proper financial control and promoting good governance in public institutions. The specific objectives of the study were to assess the impact of auditing on reducing mismanagement of public funds, examine its role in curbing corruption, and determine its effect on minimizing defalcation in local government administration. A quantitative research design was adopted for the study. Data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to selected respondents within the local government system. The data obtained were analyzed using simple percentages and presented in tables for clarity and easy interpretation.  The findings revealed that effective auditing significantly contributes to reducing mismanagement of public funds, limiting corrupt practices, and preventing defalcation in local government administration. The study also showed that regular internal and external audit activities enhance financial discipline, strengthen accountability, and improve transparency in public sector management. The study recommended strengthening the independence of audit units, ensuring strict compliance with financial regulations, providing adequate training for audit personnel, and enforcing appropriate sanctions against financial misconduct. It concluded that effective auditing is a crucial instrument for reducing outright embezzlement and promoting sound financial management in local governments....
