Abstract
This study examined the effect of increased tuition fees on the academic performance of students in a tertiary institution. A case study of Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo. Descriptive survey research design was used to carry out the research. Simple random sampling technique was used to select the respondents for the study. Five (5) departments were selected in the School of Arts and Social Sciences and School of Languages, whereby three (3) departments were selected in School of Arts and Social Sciences and two (2) departments school of languages. The data collected from the respondents was analyzed using statistical tools of tables, charts, mean score and standard deviation and t-test to test the hypothesis of the study. From the findings of this study, it was deduced that students neither attend classes promptly nor pay their school fees as due and also they miss classes as a result of their struggle to meet the increased tuition fee. Also, school fees being paid by the students are not affordable and some of them struggle to gather money to settle tuition fees, which later reduces their time for study. It was revealed that students do not have time to read on their own after school hours. Also, the finding shows that some students involved themselves in social vices in order to meet their school fees, and this has caused some other students to get involved in examination malpractices in order to have better academic performance. Also, it was revealed that students could not afford the adequate textbooks required for all their courses. It was therefore recommended that governments should, on their part, make provision for adequate infrastructures and facilities needed for the smooth operation of the school system, as well as make an effort in providing scholarship to deserving students....
