Abstract
This study appraises the effectiveness of radio as a tool for community broadcasting in addressing the prevalent social challenges of early marriage, teenage pregnancies, and alcohol abuse in Isiokpo, Rivers State. The research recognizes radio as a critical medium of mass communication with a vast reach and influence, particularly in rural communities where literacy levels and access to digital media are limited. This study, therefore, investigates how effectively community radio programs contribute to behavioral change, awareness creation, and social transformation in relation to these social vices. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design, employing structured questionnaires as the main instrument for data collection. A total of 394 respondents were selected as sample size using the multi-staged and stratified sampling technique from residents of Isiokpo community, ensuring representation across age, gender, and educational backgrounds. 394 copies of questionnaire were administered, out of which 350 copies were retrieved for analysis. Data collected were analyzed using frequency tables, percentages, and descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that community radio plays a significant role in raising awareness about the consequences of early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and alcohol abuse. The study concludes that while community radio in Isiokpo has made notable contributions toward addressing social problems, its full potential remains underutilized due to operational and structural constraints. As a result, the study recommends increased investment in community broadcasting infrastructure, regular training of radio presenters on social advocacy, and collaboration between government agencies, NGOs, and local broadcasters to ensure program continuity and relevance. Furthermore, the study advocates for the development of more interactive radio formats—such as talk shows, call-ins, and storytelling—that engage young audiences and stimulate community dialogue. ...
