Abstract
This study investigated the influence of TikTok on the morality of polytechnic students using Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, as a case study. The study was motivated by the increasing popularity of TikTok among Nigerian youths and growing concerns about its potential effects on students' moral values, attitudes, and behaviour. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, with a population of 12,500 students from which a sample of 200 respondents was selected using Taro Yamane's formula and a multi-stage sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, validated by experts and tested for reliability, yielding a reliability coefficient of 0.82. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square analysis were employed to analyse the data. The findings revealed that TikTok significantly influences students' moral perceptions and decision-making, with the majority of respondents acknowledging that the platform shapes their understanding of acceptable behaviour, encourages imitation of online trends, and exposes them to morally questionable content. Respondents also agreed that exposure to sexualized and entertainment-oriented content negatively affects campus moral discipline, although educational, religious, and motivational videos on TikTok were found to promote positive moral values among some students. Furthermore, the study established that peer influence, academic background, and prolonged exposure to TikTok moderate its impact on students' morality. The study concluded that TikTok has both positive and negative moral implications depending on the type of content consumed and recommended that educational institutions, parents, and policymakers promote digital literacy, ethical social media usage, and greater awareness of responsible online behaviour among students....
