Abstract
This study examined the impact of auditing on reducing embezzlement of public funds in Makurdi, Benue State. The primary objective of the study was to determine the extent to which auditing contributes to the prevention, detection, and reduction of embezzlement in public sector organizations. The study adopted a survey research design and utilized both primary and secondary sources of data. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to selected employees of public institutions in Makurdi, while secondary data were obtained from textbooks, academic journals, government publications, audit reports, and relevant internet sources. The study was anchored on Agency Theory and Fraud Triangle Theory. Data collected were analyzed using frequency tables, percentages, and chi-square statistical techniques. The findings revealed that effective auditing significantly contributes to reducing embezzlement of public funds through improved internal control systems, enhanced accountability, and early detection of financial irregularities. The study further revealed that challenges such as inadequate auditor independence, poor implementation of audit recommendations, and insufficient resources hinder the effectiveness of auditing in public institutions. The study concluded that auditing remains an essential instrument for promoting transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.
