This study investigates the knowledge, prevalence, use, and barriers to contraceptive methods among female undergraduates at Bayero University Kano (BUK). Objective: The study aimed to evaluate female undergraduates'' contraceptive knowledge, prevalence of use, influencing factors, and barriers to effective contraception. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with a sample of 176 female undergraduates at BUK, determined using Fisher’s formula. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed to collect data on contraceptive knowledge, usage patterns, influencing factors, and barriers. Results: The study found that 84.7% of respondents received formal education about contraceptives, primarily from healthcare personnel. Despite high awareness, with 96.0% acknowledging contraceptives’ effectiveness in preventing pregnancies and STIs, only 37.5% of respondents reported using contraceptives. Commonly used methods included oral contraceptives (15.9%) and emergency pills (8.5%). Barriers to contraceptive use included religious and cultural beliefs (81.3%), side effects (21.0%), and stigma (13.1%). Factors influencing use included ease of use and satisfaction with current methods, while misconceptions and societal attitudes significantly impacted usage. Conclusion: Although there is substantial awareness and formal education about contraceptives among female undergraduates at BUK, actual usage is limited. Cultural and religious beliefs, concerns about side effects, and stigma are significant barriers.
