Abstract
This study examines taxation as an alternative to dwindling oil revenue in Nigeria, using Kogi State Board of Internal Revenue Services as the study area.  The objectives of the study are to examine whether taxation can enhance revenue generation in Nigeria, whether taxation can serve as an alternative to dwindling oil revenue in Nigeria, and the significant relationship between taxation and revenue generation in Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design was adopted in the study and the methods of data collection were primary and secondary methods of data collection. The primary data were collected using a questionnaire.  From the population of 150, a sample size of 109 was chosen using the Taro Yamane formula. Frequency counts, percentages and chi-square were used to test the hypotheses. The findings revealed that taxation can help the government raise income for the provision of social amenities for the people. Taxation is an instrument for income and wealth distribution in Nigeria; taxation can serve as an alternative to dwindling oil revenue in Nigeria by diversifying the government’s revenue sources, reducing reliance on oil.  It was also concluded that Effective tax revenue can lead to improved productivity and human capital development, ultimately contributing to economic growth.
