Abstract
The high cost of imported raw materials used in the production of conventional emulsion paint, particularly calcium carbonate extender and titanium dioxide pigment, has continued to increase the retail cost of paint in Nigeria. This study investigated the production of low-cost emulsion paint using rice husk ash (RHA) and eggshell powder (ESP) as partial and total replacements for calcium carbonate extender. Rice husk was sourced from a local rice mill, washed, dried and calcined at 600°C for 4 hours to obtain rice husk ash, while eggshells were collected from local eateries, washed, sun-dried and ground into fine powder. Five paint formulations were produced: a control sample (100% calcium carbonate extender) and four experimental samples in which the extender was replaced with a 1:1 RHA/ESP blend at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% substitution levels. The paints were characterized for density, viscosity, drying time, p H, hiding power, spreading rate, adhesion, water resistance and storage stability, in accordance with ASTM and Nigerian Industrial Standard test methods. The paint properties obtained were within acceptable standard limits for all substitution levels up to 75%, with density ranging from 1.20 to 1.32 g/cm³, and hiding power from 86.4% to 96.5%. It was concluded that rice husk ash and eggshell powder, being agricultural and domestic waste materials, are viable, cost-effective and environmentally friendly substitutes for calcium carbonate in emulsion paint production....
